Dr Mdala Engages Students in Advanced Statistical Model Workshops

The Centre for Resilient Agri-food Systems (CRAFS) recently hosted Dr. Ibrahimu Mdala, a distinguished researcher from the University of Oslo’s Department of Medical Sciences. During his visit, Dr Mdala led a series of in-depth discussions with postgraduate students, focusing on statistical models relevant to their research projects.

Dr. Mdala introduced students to Count models, explaining their applications in medical research and simplifying complex concepts in a way that captivated the audience. His sessions sparked considerable interest, with many students seeking advice on integrating these techniques into their work.

He further explored Prediction and Markov models, dedicating significant time to Machine Learning, particularly Supervised Machine Learning and Regression Models. Dr Mdala also provided insights into Regularization techniques, particularly Lasso Regression, and delivered a detailed discussion on Multi-state Models in Markov processes. The interactive nature of these sessions, filled with practical examples and illustrations, helped deepen students’ understanding of these advanced concepts.

Dr. Mdala concluded his stay with an informal session, during which students discussed various topics in a relaxed setting. This offered a valuable opportunity for casual learning and exchanging ideas. In the coming weeks, Dr. Mdala will continue collaborating with Dr. Tiwonge Manda and Dr. Elias Mwakilama at the university.
