On August 9, 2023, the University of Malawi (UNIMA) and the University of Rovuma-Niassa Extension in Mozambique formalised their partnership by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU). The MoU aims to enhance collaboration between the two institutions, advancing research, teaching, and innovation. The Centre for Resilient Agri-Food Systems (CRAFS), a key player in this partnership, will actively implement several activities outlined in the MoU. The agreement was signed by Professor Samson Sajidu, Vice Chancellor of UNIMA, and Professor Mário Jorge Brito dos Santos, Magnificent Rector of the University of Rovuma.
Professor Sajidu described the MoU as a gratifying and pivotal moment for the two universities. He emphasised that the partnership will, among other issues, enable UNIMA, through CRAFS, to develop joint degree programs, strengthen student and staff exchange initiatives, and align with international research and innovation standards. This collaboration is a crucial step towards achieving UNIMA's goals within Malawi’s Vision and the University’s 2022-2027 Strategic Plan, which focuses on expanding access to higher education.
Professor Brito dos Santos highlighted the historical connections between Malawi and Mozambique, such as shared resources like Lake Niassa and the Shire River and existing railway links. He believes the MoU marks a significant milestone for both universities, facilitating joint research, teaching, and innovation projects. During the visit, the UNIMA delegation also toured an exhibition of work by Rovuma students, showcasing the vibrant academic exchange between the two institutions.
