Chipo Kanjo, PhD

Chipo Kanjo is an Associate Professor in the Computing Department at the University of Malawi with over twenty years of experience in ICT research. Her research interests include Informatics, e-Governance, and ICT4D. She holds a doctoral degree in Information Systems from the University of Oslo, a master’s degree in Computing from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK, several certificates, including Corporate Governance, Conservation Management, Environmental Impact Assessment, and a CISCO Networking Instructors certificate; and she is a Diplo Foundation alumnus. Chipo’s research in Informatics has focused on the community level; this involves soliciting requirements and assessing the needs and data practices (when collecting, analysing, and transferring) to guide the design of information systems. Some of the research activities involved include the National Agriculture Management Information System and the EU-funded Horizon 2020 BETTEReHEALTH project - addressing three aspects related to successful e-health these are human, technical and public policy factors; the integrated Community Health Information Systems (iCHIS) project; and Principal Investigator for another EU-funded project - the mHealth4Afrika. She is the current Chairperson for the Board of Commissioners for the National Aids Commission (NAC) and a Member of the Interim Committee for the Malawi Health Informatics Association. She is also an active member of the Malawi mHealth Technical Working Group, Community Health TWG, Health Systems Monitoring & Evaluation TWG and the National Data Standards TWG. Chipo has also been a Chairperson for the National ICT Working Group for Malawi and a Research Fellow for the UN-Internet Governance Forum in Geneva.
